Critical Review 3: NBA 2K17

NBA 2K17 is a basketball simulation video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. It was released worldwide on September 20th, 2016, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Like the previous games in the series, NBA 2K17 strives to realistically depict the experience of the National Basketball Association, as well as present improvements over the previous installments. The player mainly plays NBA basketball games with real-life or customized players and teams. As such, games follow the rules and objectives of NBA basketball games. Several game modes are available for the player and many settings can be customized. The game contains many presentation qualities that are modeled on real-life presentation, such as crowd animations, commentary, pre-game, halftime, post-game shows, camera angles, lighting, and player animations. One of the more popular improvements is the game’s returning of the MyGM and MyLeague game modes. Both modes have the player acting as the ruling force of all basketball operations for a specific team and allow the player to customize many aspects of the team. MyGM is more focused on maintaining a realistic, functioning team and impressing the owner, whereas MyLeague offers far more customization options. The player simulates through seasons in both modes, changing personnel, playing in games themselves, and participating in off-season activities like the draft. NBA 2K17 also offers the MyTeam mode where the player gets to create the ultimate basketball game, and maintaining a virtual trading card collection. Players build their own custom team where they are in charge of jerseys, players, location, logo, and other basketball related things. The player essentially plays in basketball tournaments against other player’s teams. Players collect cards that unlock certain things that can be sold within the game for points. MyCareer mode returns in NBA 2K17. The player creates a basketball player and plays through their career. The player can customize the appearance and upgrade their attributes as they get better as a player. The player also participates in off-season activities where a story-line is in place. The game separates itself with it’s graphics, the experience is incredibly realistic. the players have similar movements to the real life players. Seldom times, they’re some glitches in the game which can be annoying but it doesn’t really effect the outcome of the game usually. It is very easy to navigate through the video game. So much so that probably a child under the age of ten could easily go through the video and get where they want to go. The story-line mode in the game is fairly interesting, the player goes trough the lifestyle of an NBA rookie. The player gets to pick certain lines the player can say in certain situations. Depending on which lines the player chooses, it gives off a positive or negative vibe from the created player. The created player also has a cellphone where he can check his emails and social media accounts. The player is in complete control of his performance in the game and his perception outside of the game. The NBA 2K franchise has no signs of slowing down, each games gets bigger and bigger every year. As the years go on, the game will get better with it’s graphics. NBA 2K offers the most realistic basketball experience for a video game.
